The Department of Health and Human Resources is charged with ensuring the safety, permanency, and well-being of children ages 0-17. In 2017, 881 referrals of child abuse and/or neglect were looked into in Monongalia alone. Additionally, approximately 200 Monongalia County children spent at least one night in foster care in 2017.
When children are removed from their homes, the DHHR does their best to place children with family members first. Even though these children may be placed with family members, the DHHR is still responsible for their needs. When a family member or close family friend steps up and open their homes to these children, they are immediately burdened with extra costs that they have not budgeted for. Unfortunately, there are many times that no appropriate relatives are found for these children and these children are placed in a foster home.
While the DHHR is welcome to any donation of the above items, the storage space afforded to the DHHR is limited. Gift cards to various restaurants, Wal Mart, Target, Kohls, or any other Department store would be able to meet the individual needs of these children and relieve some of the immediate burden on these relatives and foster families.
